Where Navigation Meets Adventure
Navigation events are the most accessible form of off-road motorsport in the CCDA family. They combine the skills of 4WD driving with the challenge of navigation — using GPS coordinates, maps, clues, and puzzles to guide your team through some of Victoria's most spectacular and historic 4WD tracks.
There's no need for a purpose-built race car. Your registered 4WD and a solid navigator are your primary tools. Whether you're driving a standard family tourer or a well-modified weekender, there's a class and event designed for your vehicle.
"Each event combines navigation, problem-solving, and 4WD challenges that will test your skills and ignite your sense of adventure. Whether you're a seasoned explorer or new to the tracks, there's an experience waiting for you." — 4WD Events Australia
Bring the Whole Family
Navigation events are specifically designed with families in mind. Kids get their own set of clues to follow, turning the event into an adventure for the whole crew. Community camp environments, shared campfires, and a welcoming atmosphere make these events a brilliant weekend away.
Something for Everyone
4WD Events Australia runs a range of different navigation formats — from beginner-friendly adventure drives to hardcore 24-hour endurance events. Here are the main event types:
GeoAdventure
The perfect starting point for newcomers. Easier navigation with clues and puzzles to solve. Kids get their own notes. Easy to moderate driving difficulty — no self-recovery required. A brilliant first event for families.
GeoNav
All about the navigation challenge. UTM coordinates, stick maps, tulip notes, and other navigation techniques guide you around a multi-day course. Family-friendly, community camping, questions to answer and things to find along the way.
GeoChallenge / High Country
Track notes, maps, and questions combine in a demanding course through the Victorian High Country. Self-recovery skills required. All terrain tyres essential. Teams of at least two — driver and navigator — working as one.
Geo24 — 24 Hour Challenge
Navigate for 24 hours straight using notes and coordinates. Multiple drivers recommended to manage fatigue. Hard driving difficulty. Self-recovery required. An unforgettable endurance challenge that tests every skill you have.
The Amazing Race – 4WD
Inspired by the TV show — teams navigate to coordinates, uncover clues, complete tasks, and follow trail notes through historic and scenic Victorian regions. No stopwatch, no eliminations. Just teamwork, navigation, and discovery.
Goldfields 4WD Adventure
A Melbourne Cup weekend adventure across the Goldfields of central Victoria. Three separate driving courses over three days — each around 6 hours — through history-rich, visually stunning terrain.
Getting Your Kit Together
Navigation events are intentionally accessible. You don't need a cage or a winch to participate in most events. Here's what you'll typically need:
Registered 4WD
All courses run on public tracks so your vehicle must be road registered. Low range and good tyres are essential.
Navigation Skills
Or a willingness to learn! GPS, compass, map reading — 4WD Events Australia events teach you as you go. Beginners are very welcome.
Basic Recovery Kit
A kinetic recovery strap and shackles are the minimum recommendation. Most events are easy to moderate — full self-recovery gear for harder events.
A Team
At least a driver and a navigator. The more eyes on the notes, the better. Bring your family, your mates, or both!
Camping Gear
Most events are multi-day with community camping at a base camp. Shared campfire evenings are a major part of the event experience.
CCDA Membership
Required for competing at CCDA-sanctioned navigation events. Provides your insurance coverage and community connection.
4WD Events Australia
4WD Events Australia was founded in 2022 by experienced navigators and event organisers Gaz and Ruffy — combining years of competing in and running navigation events into one standout event series. They run events across Victoria's most scenic 4WD regions, with formats designed to suit first-timers, experienced navigators, and everyone in between.
